What this is. The data underneath is the FMCSA Motor Carrier Census (the registration record for every company with a DOT number) joined to the SMS AB PassProperty file (the same data behind the public Safety Measurement System rankings). For each state, this site ranks the largest carriers that have at least minimal CMV inspection history (≥5 inspections in the rolling 24-month window). Carriers without inspection history — typically intrastate transit and school-bus operators, recently-registered carriers, or MCS-150 entries with apparent data-quality issues — are excluded from state rankings but remain searchable by DOT number or name when they're large enough to plausibly matter. National total in state rankings: 3,890 carriers across 54 states and territories — that is the number the state pages add up to, and the Power Units, Drivers and Acute/Critical figures above are computed over exactly those carriers. Lookup by DOT number or name reaches a wider set of 4,390, including carriers held out of the state rankings by the inspection-history filter; 93% of that wider set has an SMS record. Every one of the 3,890 ranked carriers has one — the inspection-history filter guarantees it — and 3,870 of them, 99.5%, have at least one driver inspection, which is what the out-of-service column is computed from.

Source and vintage. FMCSA Motor Carrier Census and SMS, retrieved 2026-05-21 from datahub.transportation.gov; census registrations current through 2026-04-23. Every figure here is a snapshot of that extract — cite one with that date. Full methodology and limits.

What this is not, yet. Not a complete carrier listing — FMCSA registers ~2 million motor carriers; this site indexes the top 100 by fleet size in each state. Not a real-time check — SMS data lags inspections by ~30 days. Not authoritative for ratings beyond the Acute/Critical investigation flags shown; for BASIC percentile rankings, see FMCSA's SMS site — SAFER does not publish percentiles. Not an insurance verification — for current insurance and authority status, use SAFER or L&I Public.
